Mariana fruit dove

Tropics·Bird

A beautiful bird and a symbol of pride in its region, the Mariana fruit dove is the official bird of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Most often seen in the forest canopy, they feed on fruits, leaves, seeds, and flowers. Rather than fly in the treetops, they walk along the branches. They do take flight when moving to another tree, moving quickly and then staying motionless for up to 15 minutes to avoid being seen.

Like so many island bird species, the Mariana fruit dove is facing population decline due to introduced invasive species and human population expansion.
